How a sewer line fails
The sewer line carries everything from your house to the connection at the street or the septic system. It runs underground, so you rarely see trouble until something backs up. Most failures come from roots, shifting soil, age or a past repair that settled.
A clog can be cleared and the line is fine afterward. A broken or collapsed section cannot be cleaned out, it has to be repaired. Telling the two apart takes a camera, which is why the first visit often starts with a look inside the pipe.
Signs the line itself is damaged
- More than one drain backs up at the same time, such as a tub and a floor drain.
- Gurgling from a toilet when a washing machine drains.
- Cleaning the line clears it, but the backup returns within weeks.
- A damp, sunken or unusually green patch of lawn along the path of the line.
- A sewage smell outside or in the garage that has no other source.
What to do while sewage is backing up
- 1Stop sending water downSkip the shower, dishwasher and laundry. Every gallon you use has nowhere to go.
- 2Keep people and pets awaySewage carries bacteria. Keep children and animals out of the wet area and wear gloves and boots to handle anything.
- 3Do not pour drain chemicalsNever mix products, and skip them here. They do not fix a broken pipe and they put a plumber at risk.
- 4Call the 24/7 lineTell dispatch what is backing up, where, and whether anything has changed recently, like tree work.
- 5Photograph the damagePictures help with an insurance claim. Ask your insurer what your policy covers.
Sewage in the house is not a wait-and-see problem. Call the line now.
Call (239) 522-0887Repair methods and when each one fits
The right method depends on where the break is, how long the damaged section runs and what sits above it. We confirm all of that on camera before quoting anything. Look at the options side by side.
| Method | Fits when | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair by digging | One short damaged section in an accessible spot | Opens the ground over the pipe. Lawn, driveway or slab above affects how much restoration follows. |
| Pipe lining | Cracks or root entry in a pipe that is still mostly round | Creates a new inner pipe with little digging. A collapsed or badly offset pipe may rule it out. |
| Pipe bursting or replacement | Long runs of failed pipe | Pulls in a new line along the old path. Needs access points at each end. |
| Cleanout or connection repair | Damage near the house or at the cleanout | Often a smaller job, but the camera has to show it is the only problem. |
Not every house will qualify for every method. If a lining is possible we will say so, and if the pipe has collapsed we will explain why digging is the better answer. For a look inside before deciding, see sewer camera inspection.
What drives the price of a sewer repair
Factors that move the price
- Depth and length
- A shallow break near the house is less work than a deep one under the driveway.
- What is above the pipe
- Concrete, pavers, trees and landscaping all change the labor and the restoration.
- Method
- Lining and replacement cost different amounts and suit different damage.
- Pipe material and condition
- Older pipe may fail again next to a repair, so we check how far the weakness runs.
- Access and permits
- Digging near utilities or in a shared lot can add steps. Permit needs vary by job.
You get one clear price before work starts, after the camera shows what we are fixing.

Sewer line repair questions
If a cleaning clears the line and it stays clear, you had a clog. If the backup returns quickly or several drains back up together, the pipe may be damaged. A camera look decides.
We cannot. Dispatch can narrow it down from your symptoms, but only a camera shows a crack, a root mass or a collapsed section.
Not always. Lining and some spot repairs limit digging. If the pipe has collapsed or is badly misaligned, digging may be the better fix. We explain which before you agree.
Yes, when sewage is coming into the house. Stop using water and call. A slow drain with no backup can usually wait for a scheduled visit.
Rules vary by job and location. Ask the Village of Estero Community Development department, or Lee County if you live outside the village, and ask us how we handle it.
Policies differ a great deal. Ask your insurer about sewer backup and underground line coverage, and photograph the damage before cleanup.
Usually the homeowner owns the pipe up to the connection point. Ask your utility where that point sits at your address.
