What the sound and the symptom tell us
A disposal gives clear clues. A hum with no spinning means the blades are jammed. Silence means a tripped overload, a dead outlet or a failed motor. Water under the sink points to a seal or a drain fitting.
Callers often describe a sink that will not drain with the disposal running. That can be the disposal, or it can be the line beyond it. We check both before we quote anything.
| Symptom | Common cause | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Hums but does not spin | Jammed flywheel | Free the jam with the hex socket underneath, then test. |
| No sound, no power | Tripped reset button or dead outlet | Check the reset and the circuit, then the motor. |
| Leak at the top ring | Failed sink flange seal | Reseal or remount the disposal. |
| Leak at the body | Cracked housing or worn internal seal | Replace the unit. |
| Sink drains slowly | Clog past the disposal | Clear the trap and the line. |
| Bad smell | Residue in the chamber or drain | Clean out the chamber and flush the line. |
Safe steps before we arrive
What to do and what to leave alone
- Turn the disposal switch off, then unplug it or flip its breaker. Never reach in by hand.
- Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit once it has cooled.
- Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a sink with standing water. It can splash and burn skin.
- Stop running water into the sink if it is not draining.
- Move cleaning supplies out of the cabinet so the plumber has room.

Call (239) 522-0887Repair or replace the disposal
A jam or a tripped reset is quick to fix and the unit keeps running. A cracked housing or a seized motor is not repairable. At that point a new unit costs less than repeated visits.
If you are replacing, tell us the horsepower of the old unit and whether you want it quieter or stronger. A household that cooks heavily gets more from a larger motor. We also check the dishwasher drain connection, since it joins the disposal.
What not to put down the disposal
- Grease, oil and fat, which cool and coat the drain line.
- Fibrous food such as celery, corn husks and artichoke leaves.
- Coffee grounds in bulk, bones, pits and fruit stones.
- Pasta, rice and potato peel, which swell into a paste.
- Eggshells in large amounts, or any non-food item.
What drives the cost of a disposal job
Factors behind the price
- Jam or full replacement
- Freeing a jam is brief. A new unit adds the part and the install.
- Unit size and quality
- Higher horsepower and quieter models cost more.
- Electrical connection
- A hardwired unit or a missing outlet adds work.
- Drain condition
- A clog beyond the unit adds a drain cleaning step.
- Dishwasher hookup
- A dishwasher line or air gap can need new fittings.
We price before work starts, so you can weigh repair against a new unit.

When the disposal is only the symptom
If water backs up into the second sink basin, or other drains gurgle, the clog is deeper than the disposal. See drain cleaning for a kitchen line, or hydro jetting when grease has built up in the pipe.
Rules on disposal installs vary by property. Condo and HOA communities, which are common around Estero, sometimes set their own rules, so check with your association. Permit questions go to the Village of Estero Community Development department. We serve Estero, Bonita Springs and San Carlos Park.
- 1Call dispatchSay what the disposal does and whether the sink holds water.
- 2Inspect the unit and the lineWe test the motor, the seals and the drain beyond.
- 3Clear priceYou hear repair and replacement options before we begin.
- 4Fix and run testWe run water and the unit, then check the cabinet for drips.
The drain connection and trap fall under the Florida Building Code, Plumbing, 8th Edition, while the maker's installation instructions govern the unit itself. The wiring is electrical work, so ask who is handling that part before the job starts.
Garbage disposal questions
Not necessarily. A hum usually means a jam. Power it off, free the flywheel from below with the hex key, and press reset. If it hums again, call us.
We advise against it. Chemicals can splash and damage the unit and pipes. A plumber can clear it without harsh products.
Dry the cabinet, run water, and watch. A leak at the top ring, the body or the drain pipe each need a different fix.
Usually yes, if the sink has the right drain opening and a nearby outlet or switch. We check before quoting.
Food residue and grease sit in the chamber and drain. A deep cleaning and a flush often fixes it.
We offer same-day appointments when available. Call early and describe the symptom.
Yes. See commercial plumbing for restaurant and business kitchens.
